Demonstration held in Mannar
14-Jun-2025.

A massive demonstration was held in Mannar to protest against wind power projects and mineral sand excavation activities that are adversely affecting the livelihood of the local people.
The awareness rally began from the Mannar Public Playground and proceeded along the main road, eventually reaching the Mannar Bazaar area.
Participants in the rally then gathered in front of the Mannar District Secretariat, raising slogans and holding banners. Protesters carried banners bearing messages such as: "Immediately halt wind power production and mineral sand excavation that affect the livelihood of the people of Mannar,"
"Do not turn our land into a desert,"
"Do not strike, do not strike—do not strike at our stomachs."
These powerful statements reflected the community's deep concern over the environmental and socio-economic consequences of such projects.
In this context, to formally present their concerns, a petition was submitted to Mannar District Government Agent Mr. K. Kanakeswaran.
The petition was jointly handed over by the Bishop of Mannar and leaders of various religious communities, addressed to the President of Sri Lanka.
Receiving the petition, the Government Agent stated, "I am well aware that the people of Mannar have long been protesting against the wind power and mineral sand extraction projects. I will immediately forward this petition, which contains the people's demands, to the President."
The rally, initiated under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Marcus Adigalar, President of the Mannar Citizens' Committee, saw the participation of thousands of people.
Representatives of civil and public organizations across Mannar district, religious leaders of all faiths, business people, and political representatives came together in a show of solidarity, voicing a united call for justice and environmental preservation.
