Attorney General’s Department Invites University of Jaffna Archaeology Students to Join Chemmani Excavation

The second phase of archaeological excavations at the Chemmani human burial site in Jaffna will include archaeology students from the University of Jaffna.

Located in the Chemmani Sindhupathi Hindu temple area, the first phase recovered 19 human skeletal remains. 

The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has granted a 45 day excavation permit, and subject to funding availability, Phase 2 is expected to begin on 26 June 2025.

An official from the Attorney General’s Department has formally requested the participation of University of Jaffna archaeology students by securing the necessary permits for their involvement.
