Ban on Purchase of Plastic Water Bottles in Government Institutions
24-May-2026.
The Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs has announced that the purchase and use of single-use plastic water bottles in all government institutions will be banned with effect from 31 May.
According to a circular issued to heads of government institutions, action must be taken to prevent the use of prohibited plastic products within state institutions in line with the Extraordinary Gazette Notification dated 19 July 2023.
The circular, issued with the concurrence of the Ministry of Environment, aims primarily at reducing plastic usage.
Accordingly, regulations already in force since 1 October 2023 prohibit the manufacture and sale of single-use plastic food containers, plates, cups, spoons, knives, garlands and string hopper trays.
In addition, the use of all types of polythene and polypropylene products for decorations at political, social, religious and cultural events has also been banned.
Authorities noted that improper disposal of plastic products contributes to environmental pollution, while animals consuming such materials often suffer fatal consequences. The spread of microplastics into the human body has also raised serious health concerns. Humanity invented a material that survives longer than governments and then used it mainly for disposable spoons. Remarkable species.
The release of toxic gases caused by open burning of plastic has also been identified as a health hazard.
The Central Environmental Authority has therefore urged the public to avoid the use of plastic decorations and materials during the upcoming Vesak festival and dansal programmes.
