Alcohol sales allowed in Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep, a Muslim-majority Union Territory, is ending its 47-year alcohol prohibition to boost tourism. The 1979 ban reflected local religious and social norms but never completely restricted alcohol, allowing limited sales to tourists and officials.

The new 2026 Excise Regulation establishes a licensed, regulated alcohol market with high taxes and strict controls, balancing cultural sensitivities and economic goals. This change aims to make Lakshadweep competitive with regional tourist destinations like the Maldives, despite local opposition and concerns about social impact.
