Twelve people were arrested in connection with a violent protest at the site of a proposed ethanol plant in the Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana.

The incident occurred on June 4 when a large group of villagers gathered near Pedda Dhanwada village in Rajoli mandal (administrative subdivision) in the same district, demanding that the state government revoke its approval for the project. The protesters from seven to eight of the nearby villages allegedly set fire to temporary shelters built for construction workers as well as a container placed at the site by the company.

The villagers are concerned that the plant could harm their farmland and release “foul gases”, which they fear may force them to abandon their homes, which have been “spoiled with chemicals”.
