6.9 magnitude quake strikes Japan

An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale struck the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan on Monday,

The Associated Press reported, citing the country's meteorological agency. The quake triggered tsunami warnings in two prefectures, which were lifted after nearly three hours.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred off Miyazaki Prefecture at 9:19 pm (local time), and had an intensity of lower 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in the hardest-hit areas, NHK reported. No damage or injuries were reported.

Tsunami advisories for waves of a maximum height of one metre (3.3 ft) were issued for the southern prefectures of Miyazaki and Kochi. A 20-centimetre (7.8 inches) tsunami was later recorded reaching Miyazaki city, according to NHK. However, all tsunami advisories were lifted close to midnight.
